May and June 2009. going going......
This is the weirdest business in the world, the wedding biz. Used to be back in "the day" people booked their venues and photographers 12-18 months in advance. That was pretty much the standard, to be honest. With a short "desirable" season here in Wisconsin the 25 Saturdays available between May and October booked out crazy amounts of time in advance. Friends and family learned not to schedule a cook out in those months on a Saturday if they wanted me there.
Suddenly, about 2 ish years ago the tide turned. I have no idea why...(I'd like to blame it on George W Bush like I blame everything...whoops, did I type that out loud?)and suddenly 6-9 months became the standard. As far as I can tell it could just be more venues available, more people who are willing to have a wedding on a Friday or a Sunday..I'm really not sure. So I am no longer surprised that I am still booking out random dates for this fall when years ago that would have been unthinkable. A few years ago if in July I didn't have October booked out then I could pretty much plan on a nice month off...not the case anymore. Just when I think I have a week end off I'll get an email and book a wedding on Tuesday for the same Saturday. I'm not complaining, mind you...it's just that in my 12 years of doing this it's been an odd turn of events.
So imagine my surprise when suddenly May and June of 2009 are now the hot dates and daily my inbox is filled with inquiries for those dates and client meetings and holy hell why does EVERYONE want to get married May 12??? Did I miss a karmic memo about that date?
Just when I think I have it all figured out, again....I don't. And talking to other local photographers they all report the same thing. So fair warning gentle reader; if your wedding date is in the spring of next year then don't delay. Dates are filling up fast and furious. It's not unusual for me to get 10-15 inquires a day for the spring of 2009.
And of course, if I am booked for you day don't despair, I'll refer you to some most awesomest photographers in the area. Because that is just how I roll :)

Sam's Senior Portraits
When Sam's mom called and told me that same liked the "industrial look" I knew right away I wanted to shoot his photos in the Third Ward. It's become the new hip and trendy spot around town, yet it retains it's Old Milwaukee charm despite it. I've shot dozens of sessions there but no one ever looks the same. Each time I go there I find different doorways, different angles, alleys and the quality of light is different. It's my favorite way to shoot, to be honest. To just wander and look for the light and the spot.

My editing buddy
As is the case with both cats in my life, Zack simply showed up one day. Milo, my other cat just wandered in my back door one day, announcing "I live here". Zack was abandoned at an animal hospital/boarding place and a friend who knew I would not be able to say no told me he had lived in a cage for over 6 months. His owners had come back at one point and took his brother, but not him. It's now become obvious to me why, Zack does not like to use a litter box in the traditional manner. He prefers to go NEXT to the litter box. Sigh. And since he is by my vets estimate 11 or 12 years old, there's probably no teaching this old cat new tricks. We've solved the problem by having no fewer than 6 litter boxes with lots of newspaper next to them. He is doing better and every time I get frustrated with him he does something like this. He just sits next to me on my desk as I edit and purrs like a motorboat. I don't even have to touch him, he just revels in being here. So what to do? So I clean lots of litter boxes every day; I think I'm giving him a good life for what time he has left.

This made me laugh out loud...literally
Plunking along on today's editing when this image from Natalie and Andrew's wedding popped up on my screen. I'm not sure why it made me laugh so, probably because the series of photos leading up to this were of Natalie and her sister having a touching moment and then suddenly, Natalie is Batwoman with the veil out of the clear blue. To be honest, I don't even recall taking this shot, it probably happened in a split second. But it really captures Natalie's funny spontaneous side that makes her such a fun and cool person to be around. Thanks for the chuckle, Natalie...working on those images, they'll be live by the end of the week :)

Just another reason to shoot Canon
This commercial maddens me. Way to go Nikon, nothing like making it look like anyone can be a wedding photographer. I think I'll go become a TV star like Ashton because it's so easy anyone can do it, right?

I finally got my issue of PDN!
Back in March I got word that one of my images won the 2008 Top Knots New School of Wedding Photography from Photo District News. Well, I finally got the issue, and there I am on page 93. Directly next to and above me is work by my good friend Jon Canlas who is based in Utah and does kick ass work. Here's the tear sheet:
